The gymnastics ribbon is one of the most commonly used pieces of gymnastics equipment. We have all seen numerous gymnasts swivel the ribbon to and fro in various patterns at some or the other point in time. Looking at gymnasts create wonderful patterns with the ribbon, most of us feel that we too can do the same but it is not as easy as it seems.
It may be easy to stand still and move the ribbon in various patterns. But the problem arises when you too are moving along with the ribbon. When both the gymnast and the ribbon are moving, there is always a chance of the ribbon getting entangled or the ribbon not moving in sync with the ribbon. A ribbon is used to create different kinds of patterns that appeal the eye. Some of the most popular movements include swings, circles, snakes, spirals etc. Additionally, the gymnast may make patterns of eight along with small throws. Some professionals also make extremely unique patterns. You too can learn some of the basic patterns that gymnasts create with the help of the ribbon such as door plane, table plane and wheel plane. For the door plane, take a gymnast ribbon and swing it from your lower right to your upper left side. Now bring the ribbon to the lower left side and to the upper right side. Now supplement this with movements of the body. It will take some practice before you can perform this like a professional. There are basically two types of movements that are associated with the use of the gymnastic ribbon. These are large swinging movements and small wrist movements. It is these two movements that primarily help a gymnast draw numerous patterns in the air with the help of the ribbon. The large sweeping movements make use of the whole arm. Typically this movement is used to create large sweeping and curved patterns with the help of the ribbon. On the other hand, small wrist movements are used to make small snakes, circles or coils. This movement basically uses the palm and the wrist either in a horizontal manner or stirring the ribbon. Not anybody and everybody can stir up the gymnast ribbon to create beautiful patterns. There is a certain technique of holding the gymnast ribbon that is mastered only by professional gymnasts. Typically, the ribbon is held between the thumb and the forefinger. This gives the gymnast a firm grip over the ribbon. Some times, the gymnast may also hold a part of the ribbon between his/her fingers. The gymnast ribbon when used as a part of complete sequences adds elegance and style to the overall performance. Related Articles
